Dihydrotestosterone (DHT)

DHT - DihydrotestosteroneDihydrotestosterone (DHT) is an androgen, synthesized primarily in the male prostate gland, testes, hair follicles, and adrenal glands by the enzyme 5a-reductase.

DHT is is responsible for the development of secondary sex characteristics in men. DHT has 3 times greater affinity for androgen receptors than testosterone and has 15-30 times greater affinity than adrenal androgens.

Despite the fact that DHT has relatively little direct anabolic effect on muscle, DHT has an important role in optimizing your over-all health and performance via the central nervous system, increasing strength, fighting against stress, and improving sexual function and libido.

DHT for Gynecomastia

Gynecomastia is a condition that affects men around the world. The main symptom of gynecomastia is the development of extra breast tissue. Gynecomastia treatment includes DHT gel. Andractim gel is topically applied to the chest several times a day, and the DHT increases the testosterone to estriadol ratio, shrinking the breast tissue.

DHT for Androgen Replacement Therapy

Currently, DHT hormone replacement therapy isn’t commonly used as a treatment for DHT androgen deficiency. However, several studies have concluded that topical DHT is safe for treating older men with andropause.

We conclude that 3 months treatment with transdermal dihydrotestosterone gel demonstrates expected androgenic effects, short-term safety, and limited improvement in lower limb muscle strength but no change in physical functioning or cognitive function. [more]

Percutaneous DHT administration is a relatively safe modality of androgen replacement therapy as far as atherogenicity is concerned. [more]

DHT’s Anti-Estrogen Effects

Unlike other androgens such as testosterone, DHT cannot be converted by the enzyme aromatase to estradiol. DHT protects against estrogen. When DHT is blocked with hair loss drugs like Finasteride and Proscar, heightened estrogen levels can cause the development of gynecomastia.

Experimental studies have suggested that estrogen is also a causation factor in benign prostate hypertrophy (BPH.) While DHT stimulates cell growth in the tissues that line the prostate gland, DHT’s anti-estrogenic effects mean it can actually be used to treat BPH.

Some body builders also favor DHT in a supplement stack for it’s ability to protect against estrogen, and assist with pre-competition hardening.

DHT for Penis Growth

DHT is the most influential hormone in the development of male external genitalia. Numerous studies have shown that DHT is effective in the treatment of microphallus. Best results were achieved in younger patients, whose age contributed to a higher number of active androgen receptors in genital tissues. Adult men have a lower number of androgen receptor but can repair and even re-grow receptors via PE exercises, making them better candidates for penis growth with topical DHT cream.

Transgender men also have androgen receptors in genital tissues and often respond positively to DHT treatment for genital growth. Several surgeons who perform SRS for trans men recommend Andractim DHT Gel or compounded DHT cream to maximize phallus growth both before and after surgery. More about DHT and FTM Dick Growth.

A semi-synthetic analog of DHT is called Stanolone, also known as Androstanolone.
